A Tennessee Tanka for My Mother

Dogwoods and Daughters

I never thought t’ask
She never made the promise
But when the Dogwoods blossom
I wish my mother could have
Lived to meet my sweet daughters

A note of Japanese poetry forms

A tanka is a type of Japanese poetry that pre-dates haiku. Its form is made up of a 5-7-5, kami-no-ku (upper phrase), and a 7-7, shimo-no-ku (lower phrase).
